Stars: Jared Leto, Matt Smith, Jared Harris
Morbius, played by Jared Leto, grew up with a blood disorder that will eventually kill him at a young age. Determined to find a cure, Morbius obsessively researches blood infusions using various types of animal blood to connect with his missing DNA parts. Things take a dark turn when his assistant infuses his blood with vampire bat’s DNA as he descends into impulses for human blood and supernatural powers. His friend, Mylo, also with a blood disorder realizes Morbius’ transformation and wants to embrace the dark side of this newfound strength.
While Morbius is a Marvel character, this movie wasn’t created by Marvel Studios as was the other 30 or so movies that have been made in the last couple of decades. Instead, it was created by Sony studios, which created the Tobey Maguire’s version of Spiderman. This has upset some, as they think Marvel Studios/Disney have made a superior run of Marvel comics. However, I found the movie to be refreshingly dark and suspenseful. I found myself constantly hiding behind my fingers in anticipation for any blood massacres.
Some characters didn’t get a lot of character development, making them lackluster and confusing as to why Morbius cared so much to be with them (or avoid them.) However, I think the story had a natural progression and made me want to see more.
