Auburn Reed has been through a lot since she was 15: the death of her first love, pregnancy, and losing custody of her son to her dead boyfriend’s mom and brother. During her struggle to rebuild her life, she meets artist Owen Gentry and their connection is instant. Owen has his own secrets to confess to and it’s costing him and Auburn everything.
What I Think:
I was pleasantly surprised by this book. Because I’ve read three previous books by Colleen Hoover that were none too high up in my regard, I was a little wary of what this book was going to entail. Instead I found two characters who made realistic decisions with realistic consequences. Auburn is trying to get back the custody of her son from a woman who has no intention of letting her have anything to do with him. Owen is a good guy who wants to protect his father from the consequences of his pill addiction. Because Auburn’s “in-laws” want to be in control of her, they are doing everything they can to keep her away from other people, especially Owen. I could see something like this happening in real life.
The ending was a little too perfect for me, a little too clean and wrapped up but in the end, I think it worked out perfectly. This is a book I wouldn’t have a problem in recommending to others. If you’re into Nicholas Sparks, this book in particular runs similar in those veins, but with a happy ending. In comparison to the other books I’ve read by her, this is nearly perfect. Just don’t read anything else by her.
